Beneath the Surface | Bayer
There’s a whole universe in the soil beneath our feet. Cover crops and no-till farming hold the potential to minimize agriculture’s contribution to climate change. Filling fields during periods when they’re typically empty help protect soil from erosion and create a better environment for crops to grow. Reducing tilling also lessens how much carbon gets released into the atmosphere. In the second episode of our docuseries, Illinois farmers Mindy and Justin Jefferson, explain why they adopted climate-friendly farming practices with the hope that it will conserve their land for the next generation. CoverCress geneticist Ratan Chopra and plant scientist Mark Messmer discuss how plant science and traditional breeding are creating new crops that hold great potential for soil preservation and the production of oil for low-carbon biofuel.
